Oulu University Process Metalurgy Group

As a part of the Centre of Advanced Steels Research (CASR), research conducted at the Process Metallurgy Group is focused on two of the University’s five thematic research focus areas: Creating sustainability by materials and systems as well as Digital solutions in sensing and interactions.

The mission of the Process Metallurgy Group is to carry out research on metallurgical and other high-temperature processes and to produce for the metallurgical industry diploma engineers and doctors, who understand and master the phenomena of high-temperature processes in the metallurgical industry. The research activities of the laboratory based on the understanding of reactions, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics and mass and heat transfer phenomena in high-temperature processes. These research actions contain all the individual unit processes of steelmaking onwards from raw material handling to continuous casting of steel.

Future Manufacturing Technologies (FMT) research group of The University of Oulu is a part of the Kerttu Saalasti Institute.

FMT Group’s research focuses on manufacturing technologies and processes of refining sheetmetal and plate material into end-products. The group started in 2004 under the name of ELME Research Group. Its focus areas include multiple points in the manufacturing process, from efficiently using advanced steels to cost-efficient production automation and additive manufacturing.

FMT is a part of The University of Oulu Center for Advanced Steels Research (CASR) and its main office is at ELME Studio, Nivala. Some of the researchers also work at the main campus in Oulu, in cooperation with The Material and The Production Technology Research Group.
